Saracens have had a proposal to expand the salary cap rejected by rival clubs — after warning that they may not be able to field a competitive team after the World Cup.

The club called for extra World Cup credits to be made available for the 2019/20 season, as compensation for losing players to duty in Japan.

A vote was held earlier in the season, before questions were raised about whether the club have broken the salary cap by forming businesses with stars such as Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje.
