Monchi is expected to be announced as the new technical director at Arsenal next month after his departure from Roma last week.
Arsenal, who take on Manchester United on Sunday in a battle for Champions League qualification, hope to make an announcement before the end of the season.
The man who gained a formidable reputation at Sevilla, where he worked alongside Arsenal manager Unai Emery for three years, left his Roma post early after the team were knocked out of the Champions League and coach Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked.
Monchi is expected to be named as Arsenal's new technical director next month
Monchi was one of the preferred candidates of Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal’s head of football, who is leading the search for the final member of the club’s senior executive team.
Former Arsenal player Marc Overmars was also a strong candidate but is under contract to Ajax until 2020 and, having overseen their progress to the Champions League quarter finals last week, the club would not have let him go cheaply.
Sanllehi seems to have settled on Monchi, who made his name at Sevilla where, after a brief spell as goalkeeper, he was made sporting director in 2000. He helped to transform the club into regular Champions
