Chelsea kid Callum Hudson-Odoi earns first England call-up despite playing just 119 minutes in the Premier League this season and NEVER featuring for the U21s Callum Hudson-Odoi has been selected for the England senior squad Hudson-Odoi was told the news when he met up with the Under 21s on Monday He was set to earn his first U21 cap against Poland at Ashton Gate on ThursdayBy Dominic King for the Daily Mail Published: 16:48 GMT, 18 March 2019 | Updated: 16:49 GMT, 18 March 2019 Viewcomments Callum Hudson-Odoi's remarkable season has taken another dramatic twist as the teenager has been called into England's senior squad. The Chelsea winger left his home in London on Monday morning to join up with the Under-21 team for their forthcoming friendlies with Poland and Germany. He arrived at their base in Bristol at 11.30am after a 140-mile journey and went straight for lunch. No sooner had the 18-year-old sat down, though, he was summoned by Under-21 head coach Aidy Boothroyd and told that another car was waiting for him to take another 140-mile journey from Bristol to St George's Park, where he met up with Gareth Southgate. Callum Hudson-Odoi has had a Monday to remember after earning an England senior call-up The Chelsea starlet was informed of the news just after joining up with the Under-21 squad Boothroyd had planned to give him his first Under-21 cap against Poland at Ashton Gate on Thursday but now it is almost certain Hudson-Odoi — who has played just 119 minutes in the Premier League this season — will feature in the Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro. 'Callum is a phenomenal talent,' said Boothroyd. 'I'm disappointed he's not going to be here but I do have to say it's great. I told him "I've got some good news and bad news for you"… The good news is the seniors have called you up; the bad news is that you have to come back to me in the summer! 'He looked at me as if to say "what's your problem? Why am I not there already?" No, he didn't! A big smile come across his face and it is good. You work really hard to get an opportunity as a player. You do the right things all the time and then you get an opportunity. 'When a door opens and you have got to be able to walk through it. That's what Jadon Sancho has done, that's what Ben Chilwell has done, Joe Gomez and the rest. I'm sure he will get an opportunity and will show what he can do.' Hudson-Odoi is one of the hottest prospects in European football and was the subject of four bids from Bayern Munich in January, the last being £35million. The 18-year-old has only played 119 minutes in the Premier League for Chelsea all season However, England manager Gareth Southgate clearly rates the teenage winger highly He has scored five goals in 19 appearances for Chelsea and was a rare bright spark for his side in a 2-0 defeat at Everton on Sunday when coming on as a late substitute. As a member of the Under 17 World Cup-winning squad from October 2017, the Football Association have high hopes for Hudson-Odoi and Boothroyd expects to have him available for selection when the Under 21s contest this summer's European Championships in Italy and San Marino. 'This call-up will not faze him one bit,' said Boothroyd, who will not call up a replacement. 'He will be absolutely fine. He has shown he can handle anything. I like his self confidence, I like the way he acts. He doesn't lack any self-confidence, which I think is brilliant. 'He believes he should be at this level that he is playing at. He thinks he can get into the Champions League and I think that is a great place for a young player to be, to have that confidence. He has proved when he has been given the opportunities that he can do some things other players can't. 'He has got a really bright future ahead of him, wherever he decides to go. He is buzzing, as you can imagine.'
