Ryan Giggs kept Gareth Bale under lock and key and the result was a tedious night salvaged by Ben Woodburn's stoppage-time winner.
An experimental Wales side were heading for a dispiriting draw with Trinidad and Tobago until Woodburn chested in a cross by Will Vaulks.
Woodburn's goal changed the mood at Wrexham's Racecourse ground at a stoke, and Giggs will now go into Sunday's Euro 2020 qualifier with Slovakia off the back of a win having suffered no injuries.
