Gareth Southgate has warned his World Cup stars that if they drop out of the squad because of injury they risk losing their places in the England team because of the swathe of prodigious young talent coming through the ranks in English football.

With England Under-17 World Cup winners Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi now making their mark on the senior team, Southgate emphasised that no player could rest in their laurels and that even those who starred for him last summer in the run the 2018 World Cup semi-final could quickly come under threat.

Asked whether players who couldn’t make the squad risked being supplanted by youngsters, Southgate said: ‘Yes, absolutely. We’ve got competition for places, and I think attacking players … mature very young, and they can go in [the team] very young.
