Ross Barkley believes he has finally come of age as an England player but is refusing to get comfortable due to the pressure the rising stars are applying.
The Chelsea midfielder enjoyed the finest performance of his 29-cap career in Podgorica, as he provided an assist for Michael Keane and then scored two goals of his own. In a game where there were many candidates, Barkley was man of the match.
It was impossible not to make comparison with his mood as he left the stadium on Monday compared to how he felt after the international fixtures in March 2017. Then, he was the only member of Gareth Southgate's squad who never played a minute in games with Lithuania and Germany.
