QPR set to sack Steve McClaren after just one win in last 15 league games as club chiefs lose patience following home defeat by strugglers Bolton Queens Park Rangers are languishing in 17th place in the Championship The club could decide to part ways with the former England manager McClaren, 57, replaced Ian Holloway on a two-year contract in May 2018 By Matt Barlow for MailOnline Published: 10:47 BST, 1 April 2019 | Updated: 10:49 BST, 1 April 2019 Viewcomments Steve McClaren is set to be sacked by Queens Park Rangers after they were beaten at home by crisis club Bolton. QPR have won only once in the Championship since Boxing Day and, with seven games to play, are sliding towards to the relegation zone. Former England manager McClaren took over from Ian Holloway last summer, at the end of a season when the west London club finished in 16th position with 56 points. QPR are currently in 17th in the Championship on 44 points with seven games remaining. They have an eight-point cushion but have decided to make an immediate change in a bid to avoid being dragged further into trouble. The next fixture is a daunting trip to face leaders Norwich on Saturday. McClaren's post-playing career has been a curious mix of highs and lows since he came to prominence as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United which earned him a reputation as one of the country's brightest coaches. In his first managerial role at Middlesbrough he won the League Cup and led them to the UEFA Cup final in 2006 but his time in charge of England lasted little more than a year as the nation failed to qualify for Euro 2008. He relaunched his career in Holland, leading unfashionable Twente to the title before leaving for Wolfsburg in Germany, where he was sacked within a year with the team in relegation trouble. McClaren quit after 112 days at Nottingham Forest, a return to Twente did not rekindle his first success and there have been two spells at Derby, either side of nine months at Newcastle and he worked as a coaching consultant at Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel. He returned to English football to take over from Holloway at Loftus Road where he had once been part of the coaching staff under Harry Redknapp but has been unable to restore his reputation. QPR started the campaign with four straight defeats, which included a 7-1 thrashing at West Bromwich Albion, before climbing out of danger but they have won only once in the league this year, against promotion-chasing Leeds on February 26. The 2-1 defeat at home on Saturday has proved the final straw for McClaren. Share or comment on this article: All rights reserved for this news site dailymail and under his responsibility
