sport news St Mirren 0-2 Celtic: Hoops march step closer to eighth successive title

The fear remains that the penny will finally drop with Scottish football supporters when it's too late.

In the aftermath of Ryan Christie's decisive the Celtic away support let off two firecrackers, the noise from one prompting St Mirren's goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky to crouch down stunned holding his right ear.

Neil Lennon branded the flashbangs needless and without purpose.

The din took the sheen off what should have been Christie's big night. Celtic's march to an eighth successive title always feels easier with the midfielder in the team.

In his first appearance since February 24 the Scotland international came off the bench to apply gloss to a low key performance with a deflected strike.

'Ryan brings a lot to the team,' said Lennon. 'There was spark, creativity and a bit of pizzazz.

'He makes things happen and his enthusiasm gave us a big lift.'

Making six changes to the team which beat Dundee at the weekend Paisley boss Oran Kearney denied accusations of defeatism.

A critical relegation clash looms at Hamilton on Saturday and the changes prompted the suspicion that, not to put too fine a point on it, the Paisley side were writing this game off.

Yet until those final minutes the relegation threatened side were doggedly hanging in there. The fresh legs were going ten to the dozen.

Timothy Weah's third Celtic goal after 14 minutes really should have made this an easier Celtic win than it proved. Much of the credit for that lies with St Mirren's man of the match Hladky.

The Czech saved Olivier Ntcham's 28th minute spot kick - Celtic's fifth miss from the spot in 12 attempts this season - and pulled off a string of saves before Christie finally settled the issue

Naturally there was the obligatory Scott Brown controversy. Television pictures appeared to catch the captain stamping on the arm of St Mirren's Jim Kellerman.

Defending his captain Neil Lennon insisted: 'It was totally accidental. He didn't mean it all.'

By the end of an underwhelming game of football Celtic found themselves two wins from the title. If events go their way this weekend it could even be sooner.

Lennon made four changes to the team which struck a huge psychological blow in the march towards the title. Dedryck Boyata's season is all but over, Jozo Simunovic returning to central defence as Emilio Izaguirre replaced Kieran Tierney. Oli Burke replaced Sunday's man of the match Odsonne Edouard and Timothy Weah marked his first start under Neil Lennon with an early goal
