Valtteri Bottas will start Formula One's 1,000th race on pole position after pipping Lewis Hamilton in qualifying.

The Finn had been strong through practice and ended ahead of his Mercedes team-mate by 0.023 seconds.

Hamilton was roared on by the crowd in Shanghai but, after setting the fastest first sector time, fell away slightly. 'I've been fighting the car all weekend,' he said.
