All the drama came in a second half that saw Forest - losing for the fourth match running - down to ten men from the 47th minute when Yohan Benalouane was sent off.
Duffy struck just three minutes later and Stevens' late goal made sure of the points in what, for the Blades, really was a must-win game.
For the second weekend running, United were taking first strike in the battle for automatic promotion. And this time they hoped not to waste a chance to keep the pressure on Leeds.
Last Saturday, the Blades spilled two points on this ground, a 1-1 draw with Millwall allowing Leeds to open a three point gap in second place with a win over Sheffield Wednesday.
