The SFA will seek to establish the viability and merit of handing over interim control of the Scotland team to Malky Mackay in the next few days.
A caretaker appointment is now considered the most likely outcome of an Easter weekend of assessment and deliberation by the Hampden hierarchy following the dismissal of Alex McLeish and his coaching staff last Thursday.
That plan would bring Mackay, along with Under 21 coach Scot Gemmill, into the frame for in-house moves, with the performance director's previous experience as a senior manager and one-game role as national coach making him favourite to be No 1.

While that scenario could be confirmed later in the week, it's understood the short-term nature of the measure will not preclude Mackay from contention for the post on a permanent basis if it went well or he wish to be considered.
