Mauricio Pochettino has labelled his players ‘heroes’ in the face of scepticism over Tottenham’s results in the past two months.
It is indisputable that Spurs have lost speed on their approach to the line, with eight defeats in the past 14 games in all competitions.
That run includes Tuesday’s underwhelming first leg loss against Ajax in the Champions semi-final, but irrespective of how that tie is resolved on Wednesday, Tottenham’s season could be defined on Saturday at Bournemouth.

A win would secure a top four finish, which in the circumstances of their campaign, from stadium delays to successive transfer windows without new reinforcements, would mark it as a major success.
Pochettino was quick to draw on that point ahead of Saturday’s fixture, recalling the gloomy prognosis of last summer: ‘In that moment, that period 10 months ago, it was difficult to guess. Of course for the normal people that were outside, they were thinking it’s going to be a terrible season, a difficult season.
