Both teams are safe and unless someone at either West Ham or Southampton writes one hell of a song, neither will be in Europe next season. The beach beckons. Bad news for West Ham before a ball was kicked. Three of the heroes of the win at Tottenham a week ago were missing. Declan Rice and Felipe Anderson were ill while Robert Snodgrass was suspended. If Fraser Forster thought h would spend the afternoon putting any finishing touches to his holiday plans, he was to be disappointed. For the first time since Boxing Day 2017 when he was in a team beaten 5-2 by Spurs, Forster was in the first team. A decent enough shop window. However, it has still been a decent season for West Ham who has what can only be described as a nightmare start. Four Premier League matches – four defeats. The owners Davids Gold and Sullivan and Karren Brady could have been forgiven for heading for the hills. West Ham fans – as has been seen in the past – can be an unforgiving bunch. But the revival came under manager Manuel Pellegrini and safety was assured with games in hand. There was a big crowd inside the London Stadium for West Ham's last home game this season Goalkeeper Fraser Forster made his first appearance for Southampton since December 2017 Southampton’s relief has been more palpable. In fact it was only a week ago that manager Ralph Hasenhuttl was able to get a good night’s sleep after a 3-3 draw with Bournemouth secured the valuable point that ensures Premier League football at St Mary’s next season. But credit to the players – they passed the test of professionalism . Witness the shuddering challenge after just four minutes by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on Pedro Obiang. Then Danny Ings played in Stuart Armstrong only for the midfielder to blaze high and wide. And if there was any danger of a foot-off-the-pedal approach then someone forgot to tell Mark Noble. In the 16th minute, he capitalised as Saint Yan Valery became a sinner. His stray pass was straight to Noble who quickly spotted the run of Marko Arnautovic. The Austria international duly scored his first West Ham goal since January. By half-time, it could have been more as West Ham looked the sharper and more inventive. And as the first half went into the time added on by referee Stuart Atwell, Southampton were grateful to Forster who showed no signs of rustiness as he kept out a fierce effort from Michail Antonio. Arnautovic shot hosts West Ham into the lead on 16 minutes with a calm left-footed finish The West Ham No 7 beat goalkeeper Forster as three Southampton defenders watched on Arnautovic applauded the Hammers supporters after celebrating his goal with team-mates Clearly Hassenhuttl was less than impressed with his team and they were a full minute after West Ham re-entered the arena. And he also took off Ings and replaced him with Nathan Redmond to give Southampton more zip. It worked. Redmond provided pace lacking in the first half and his impact was immediate. A player who has a huge influence on West Ham is Noble. His attitude was captured in the 56th minute. Armstrong surged towards the West Ham area but there was Noble to make a vital challenge to ensure the threat to Lukasz Fabianski’s goal was snuffed out. When he left the field after 78 minutes, it was to a standing ovation. Quite right too. Fabianski then showed his athleticism to deny Redmond as Southampton showed more fight and vigour. But fortune was certainly not hiding as West Ham doubled their lead in the 69th minute. Arthur Masuaku drove in a fierce cross and Foster punched the ball away – on to the head of Arnautovic and the rebound went skywards to give the striker the easiest of chances. After 72 minutes, game over. Southampton failed to clear and Ryan Fredericks drove home the third. Southampton striker Danny Ings (right) played the first half but was subbed off at the interval Austrian Arnautovic capitalised on an error by goalkeeper Forster to make it 2-0 to West Ham Fredericks scored his first Premier League goal for West Ham to make it 3-0 on 72 minutes Share or comment on this article: All rights reserved for this news site dailymail and under his responsibility
