The errors may be many this season but this is more of a slump in form than any sort of rapid decline that is permanent. De Gea can fall back on his formative experiences at Old Trafford to realise he has the mental strength to come through this testing period but the difference now is that so much better is expected of him now, both from himself and the wider world.

Inexplicable errors like the Barca's second at the Camp Nou can be swept under the carpet and not worth revisiting for a second moment. The instability and laissez faire attitude to defending by those in front of him is clearly affecting his positioning and decision making and that is key to the way he is playing at the moment.

The best keepers don't dwell on errors or let them affect them in the immediate aftermath and outside of the mistakes. He looks a man unaffected. There are no signs of nervousness or insecurity on his part. No rash decisions. But for someone who has been the model of consistency for the last 6 seasons there may be insecurities creeping in.

As his goalkeeping coach, Emilio Alvarez has the job of now acting as much as a psychologist as a technical coach. With goalkeeping it is always a case of making sure bad habits don't creep and ensuring the fundamental basics are adhered to, but Alvarez will also be reminding De Gea of what has made him one of the best keepers in the world, always encouraging and accentuating the positives. Mistakes are only a crime when they are down to a lack of effort so it's important to play them down .

Much has been made of his future being in the balance
