The battle to reach the Premier League moves up a notch this weekend as the Championship play-offs finally get underway on Saturday. Aston Villa host West Brom in the first-leg of their semi-final before Leeds travel to Derby in the second game of the day. With just one place in the Premier League up for grabs and four teams set to fight tooth and nail for it, Sportsmail looks at some of the things to watch out for in the Championship play-offs. Four teams are fighting to reach the Championship play-off final at Wembley on May 27 CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFF DATES May 11: Aston Villa v West Brom (12:30) May 11: Derby v Leeds (17:15) May 14: West Brom v Aston Villa (20:00) May 15: Leeds v Derby (19:45) May 27: Championship play-off final, Wembley (15:00) Managerless West Brom The Baggies have occupied one of the play-off positions for most of the season but a draw with Ipswich back in March saw Darren Moore brutally sacked with his team fourth and nine points off the automatic places. Jimmy Shan was put in charge as caretaker boss but finds himself still in charge two months on. The 40-year-old has been awarded the job until the end of the season, when a permanent replacement will be sought. Shan has overseen six wins in 10 games in charge and there would be no greater claim to the job on a permanent basis than leading them back to the Premier League. Jimmy Shan was put in charge as caretaker boss in March but finds himself still in charge Lampard's first play-offs There was scepticism when the relatively inexperienced Frank Lampard was handed the reigns at Derby last summer over whether he could deliver top flight football to the club after several near misses. However, he assembled a vibrant young squad including Harry Wilson and Mason Mount and has impressed in his first season in the dugout as the Rams secured their place in the play-offs with a final day victory over West Brom. The Chelsea legend's managerial capabilities will be tested over the coming weeks but if he can guide them successfully through to the top flight then the Chelsea job he has been linked with before may be his sooner than we expected. Frank Lampard assembled a young squad and led the Rams into Premier League contention Villa's incredible run Dean Smith took over at Villa Park in October and completely turned their season around. They secured their finish in the play-offs with a record-breaking victory against Millwall in April. Unfortunately Villa surrendered their 12-match unbeaten run, which featured a 10 game-winning streak, against eventual champions Norwich last weekend, although they did rest some key players. Despite their recent incredible run, Villa failed to win either of their two meetings against West Brom this season and finished four points behind the Baggies in the table. Villa surrendered their 12-match unbeaten run against eventual champions Norwich on May 5 Leeds' slump Leeds were top of the Championship table at Christmas but an underwhelming second half of the campaign allowed Norwich and Sheffield United to leapfrog them into the automatic places. Marcelo Bielsa's methods and style win him plenty of plaudits but they have often drawn criticism for the physical burden they place on his players. Leeds' recent form has shown the relentless work on the training ground and in matches is starting to take its toll. Since losing to Wigan on Good Friday, Leeds lost at Brentford, drew with Aston Villa and were humiliatingly beaten at already-relegated Ipswich on the final day of the season. Leeds were top of the Championship table at Christmas but could only finish in the play-offs 'Spygate' tensions Tensions between Leeds and Derby escalated quickly earlier this year after a Leeds employee was caught spying on Lampard's training session at the club's Moor Farm base. Bielsa personally paid a £200,000 EFL fine but still went on to give a presentation on the details he keeps on opponents, prompting some raised eyebrows at Pride Park. Lampard moved to draw a line under the saga this week by stating it was not in his mind: 'Not for me, because if it was, then we're being caught up - myself and the players - in things that don't matter. What matters is how we prepare and how we go up against Leeds. 'It will matter for the fans - the rivalry is there in football, it's the beauty of football in this country, that the fans care so deeply, and there are so many outlets now for them to vent that - but we can't get involved in that at all. We have to worry about what is in front of us.' A Leeds employee was caught spying on Frank Lampard's training session earlier this season Heartbreak for Villa last season Villa can look in the history books for some motivation as they look to go one step further than last season, when they were beaten in the final bu Fulham. They are the 11th losing finalists to return to the play-offs a year later but only four have reached the final for a second successive season, three of whom went on to win promotion. If Villa reach the final once again this time around, they have a strong chance of promotion. Eleven teams have reached back-to-back Football League play-off finals after losing the first, with nine clinching promotion second time around. Tom Cairney scores the winner as Fulham beat Aston Villa in the 2018 play-off final at Wembley Grealish's last chance? Arguably the best player in the play-offs is Aston Villa's Jack Grealish and this could be the 23-year-old's last attempt at getting his boyhood club back in the Premier League. Since being named captain of the club in November, Grealish has lost just two of his 19 games and delivered a string of impressive performances. Premier League clubs are expected to come calling this summer with Tottenham keen on signing him. Should Villa go up they will hope to keep him with a lucrative new contract but they will be confident of receiving £40m for him if they don't.
