sport news Valtteri Bottas can't earn win for mum - SPANISH GP THINGS YOU MISSED

Lewis Hamilton regained the lead in the Formula One drivers' championship with an impressive victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.

While Hamilton was dominating from the front in Barcelona, there were several other interesting fights, contests and stories happening else where on the grid.

Sportsmail takes a look at a few of the alternative things you may have missed from Sunday's action.

Doing it for mum

Sunday marked Mother's Day in Finland and Holland, prompting touching tributes from Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

Bottas posted a picture of him hugging his mother, Marianne Valimaa - but unfortunately was unable to bring home the win for his mum.

Verstappen meanwhile posted a picture to Instagram of him with his mum, former kart racer Sophie Kumpen, after claiming an impressive third place.

Hamilton upsets pole precedent

Barcelona is not a track particularly welcoming to overtaking - in the previous 28 Grands Prix at this track, 25 of them were won by the pole sitter.

Hamilton will have known he needed to make his move as early as possible, and his first corner aggression to squeeze out Bottas showed he meant business.

The world champion kept his lead for the remaining 66 laps, and ensured a victory which goes down as an anomaly in this race.

Mercedes tribute to Zetsche

This weekend saw the Mercedes F1 team bid farewell to the car manufacturer's CEO, Dieter Zetsche, who is stepping down after 12 years at the helm.

Pre-race, the entire Mercedes team - including Hamilton, Bottas, and reserve driver Esteban Ocon - wore huge grey moustaches, in tribute to Zetsche's instantly recognisable look.

Zetsche, who oversaw Mercedes' return to F1 as an independent constructor and their period of total dominance of the sport, was lifted aloft on the podium by the two drivers post race.
