The decision by the International Olympic Committee executive board, which is subject to final approval next month, follows a six-month inquiry into boxing's troubled amateur governing body, looking at its finance, governance, ethics, refereeing and judging. There were prominent figures inside the sport who feared boxing could be removed from the roster altogether on the back of grave misgivings over AIBA. International Boxing Association have had role of running the sport at Tokyo 2020 suspended But while that severe option has not been taken, the governing body will be replaced for the remainder of the current Olympic cycle by a taskforce chaired by International Gymnastics Federation president Morinari Watanabe. The taskforce will now oversee qualification for the Games and then the Games itself. 'Today's decision was taken in the interest of the athletes and the sport of boxing,' said IOC president Thomas Bach. 'We want to ensure that the athletes can live their dream and participate in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 while drawing the necessary consequences for AIBA following the recommendations of the inquiry committee. IOC president Thomas Bach confirmed the sport will still be a part of the Olympic programme 'At the same time, we offer a pathway back to lifting the suspension, but there needs to be further fundamental change.' AIBA, who have run Olympic boxing for 73 years, are set to go down the legal route in response to the development. The inquiry was triggered in November after Uzbekistan's Gafur Rakhimov was elected president, despite being named on a US Treasury sanctions list 'for providing material support' to a criminal organisation. He suspended himself in March. Share or comment on this article: All rights reserved for this news site dailymail and under his responsibility
