If Gareth Southgate is serious about winning the Nations League, he has to pick Harry Kane. England must field their strongest XI against Holland and that includes Kane — even if he has only just returned from an ankle injury.
Not since 1966 have England reached a final. Can Southgate afford to keep his captain on the bench? The dilemma is not the same as the decision that faced Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the Champions League final.
Pochettino had the option of starting Lucas Moura, a player whose hat-trick fired Tottenham to Madrid. His pace might have asked more questions of Liverpool’s defenders.
