Building work has not yet started on the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick, to the west of the city, and industry insiders fear they could run out of time. The £60million project will be top of the agenda when the Commonwealth Games Co-ordination Commission undertake a six-monthly inspection visit of the venues next Wednesday and Thursday. But sources highlighted the unpredictable challenges of building pools, citing the costs of the swimming venue at London 2012, which spiralled from a proposed £75m in the bid book to £270m by completion.
