sport news 10 rising stars to watch at the Under 21 European Championships in

The European Under-21 Championship gets underway in Italy and San Marino on Sunday with 12 nations competing for the trophy.

It's typically a showcase of some of the brightest talents in the game and an excellent proving ground as they try and take the next step in their careers.

Ahead of the tournament, we highlight 10 players to watch over the next couple of weeks.

Luka Jovic (Serbia)

The Serbian striker has been making headlines already this summer following his £62million transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt to Real Madrid.

It came off the back of an outstanding season for the Bundesliga club in which he scored 27 goals to help them to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

Jovic, 21, already has six caps for the Serbian senior side so this will be something of a step down and a good chance to show Real fans what he can do.

Moise Kean (Italy)

We're only just beginning to see the potential of 19-year-old Juventus striker Kean and this competition should be another great showcase for him.

He started to pick up regular minutes in the Juventus side towards the end of the season as they sauntered to another Serie A title.

Scored for the senior Azzurri side in their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Finland and Liechtenstein back in March and should thrive in front of home support here.

Phil Foden (England)

Aidy Boothroyd leads a talented England squad into this competition and many of them already have winners medals in big competitions at youth level.

Manchester City academy graduate Foden helped the Young Lions win the Under-17 World Cup two years ago and has accelerated from there.

Played 26 matches for Pep Guardiola's side during the Quadruple season just passed and those who have seen him play fully expect him to be a mainstay at City and for England for years to come.

Dani Ceballos (Spain)

Real Madrid midfielder Ceballos played in this competition two years ago but Spain lost the final 1-0 to Germany and his performances were enough to earn a Bernabeu move.

But Ceballos hasn't been able to hold down a regular first-team place at Real and has been linked with Tottenham and West Ham this summer.

This will be the perfect shop window for the 22-year-old and that could prove handy for Real as eye-catching performances would boost his price tag as they spend big this summer.

Houssem Aouar (France)

We all know that world champions France have an abundance of talent and the likes of Aouar prove there's plenty more to come.

The Lyon midfielder, who turns 21 during the tournament, has enjoyed a fine season with seven goals and 11
