Lorenzo had made an impressive start to the race as he went from tenth to fourth in the first lap. However, he was late on the brakes as he attempted to pass Vinales on the inside at turn 10 and his collision with race leader Dovizioso caused a major pile-up involving Vinales and Rossi, who all crashed out on the second lap.
