Schwartzman had to overcome an almost one-foot height disadvantage to register only the third win on grass of his career, beating the Croat 6-4, 6-4. Cilic rose to No 5 in the world after winning the title here at Queen's last year but his form has slipped badly since then and he has made only one quarter-final in 2019. Schwartzman - one of the smallest male players at the top of the game at 5ft 7in - played with enough solidity and style to take advantage of Cilic's lack of form. He scampered around the court, did significant damage with his punched, economical two-handed backhand and sent a couple of superb lobs over his 6ft 6in opponent. The Argentine debutant secured only his third career win on grass at Queen's on Thursday Cilic, who won the US Open in 2014 and reached the Wimbledon final two years ago, looked badly lacking in confidence. His serve was without its usual potency and his groundstrokes were tentative. He will have to find a spark from somewhere soon if he is to be a threat at Wimbledon.
