sport news ROYAL ASCOT BETTING TIPS: Day four selections from Robin Goodfellow and Hollie ...

Dual Guineas heroine Hermosa has proved herself to be head and shoulders above contemporaries over a mile this season and a repeat of either of her Classic performances is likely to prove good enough to complete a magnificent Group One hat-trick.

The figures gurus have highlighted the level she reached in routing her field in the Irish Guineas last month, labelling it a better performance than her gritty Newmarket victory. The visual impression certainly suggested as much.

Of course, there is a chance an industrious spring and early summer may have taken the edge off the daughter of Galileo.

However, such was her authority and superiority in Ireland last time in beating Pretty Pollyanna that it will be a surprise if she can’t account for today’s rivals in the same manner.

Sheila Lavery was dealt a devastating blow recently when she lost star filly Lady Kaya in a training accident but LIL GREY could hand the Co Meath handler a welcome boost in this wide-open contest. The presence of two Wesley Ward speedsters — Chili Petin and Nayibeth — means this is a difficult race to be confident about.

However, the selection has looked a potential star in the making in her two outings at Leopardstown (7f) and the Curragh (6f), with her latest performance particularly impressive given the manner in which she travelled throughout a truly-run affair.

There are plenty of dangers with the likes of Galadriel (a huge eye-catcher on debut at York), JM Jackson (crying out for a step up to 6f) and emphatic Lingfield scorer Last Surprise all expected to leave their initial efforts behind them.

SELECTION: LIL GREY 20-1

DANGER: JIM JACKSON 14-1

3.05 KING EDWARD VII STAKES

The eye-catching Derby run of Japan will ensure he heads the market for this intriguing renewal and, given he has been slow to come to hand this season, there is every chance he could improve further.

Providing he has taken those exertions in his stride, the Epsom-third should take some beating here but PRIVATE SECRETARY should not be underestimated as he displayed a ready turn of foot to score at Goodwood last time.

Trainer John Gosden has won two of the last eight runnings of this event in contrast to Aidan O’Brien who has saddled 15 contenders in the last decade without success. Admittedly, the ground is an unknown for Private Secretary, but hopefully a couple of largely dry days may ensure conditions are favourable.

SELECTION: PRIVATE SECRETARY 10-3

DANGER: JAPAN 5-4

3.40 COMMONWEALTH CUP

Jash and Khaadem provide good opposition for Ten Sovereigns, who will be the banker of the day for many here after shaping well in the Guineas.

There is little doubt that Newmarket’s mile stretched the stamina of Ten Sovereigns and today’s trip will be much more suitable for a horse blessed with plenty of speed.

However, Jash, who will be ridden by Jim Crowley, only has half a length to find with the market leader on their running in the Middle Park Stakes last season and the form of his 7f comeback win in Listed company has worked out very nicely with the runner-up and fourth home winning since.

Khaadem can be a little feisty in the preliminaries but he still produced a fine performance on the clock at Newbury and will relish any cut in the ground and the stiffer track today.

SELECTION: JASH 4-1

DANGER: KHAADEM 7-1
