As an old interview has revealed, though, Lampard has had designs on the job for quite some time. 'Thinking hard about the question, he replies: 'A period earlier in my career I really fancied it and then I thought: "You know what, I really don’t fancy the managerial thing". Now I’m more back on to it. 'The problem is I’ve got to get my badges and the hard thing for me is to have time to do it, and also when I’m playing I never really want to do the badges because then I think my eyes on that and I wanted to concentrate on playing. 'As soon as I finish I’d like to take it up and maybe be a manager. But it’s hard because I only want the Chelsea job.' Probed more on that desire to return to west London, reveals that he does not envisage walking into the role, suggesting that he would like the experience of cutting his teeth in the lower leagues first. 'Only if I was good enough, and it was right, and they wanted me, and it’s the right time then yeah of course [I'd want the Chelsea job]. I’m a Chelsea man, whether you’re a Chelsea man or not it’s one of the pinnacle jobs in football. 'It might be a different route for me. It might take me a while to get there but of course the dream would be to manage Chelsea one day.'
