Top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas made relatively-light work of wild card Tommy Paul to reach the third round of the Citi Open in Washington.
The world No 6 wrapped up the first set 6-3 in just over half an hour, but the American pushed hard in the second.
Paul broke for a 5-3 lead, but lost his next two service games as Greek Tsitsipas edged a 6-5 lead and served out for the match.

Fifth seed John Isner saw off Poland's Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-4, while 15th seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert was knocked out after the Frenchman lost 3-6 6-4 7-6 (5) to Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
Milos Raonic, the eighth seed from Canada, beat American qualifier Tim Smyczek 6-1 6-4 and ninth-seeded compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime saw off Reilly Opelka 6-4 3-6 6-4.
Number 10 seed Benoit Paire needed three sets to get past Australian Marc Polmans, the world number 30 winning 6-3 6-7 (5) 7-6 (5) in just over two-and-a-half hours.
