Jack Leach insisted that England are targeting the world No 1 Test ranking as they prepare to begin a new era under incoming coach Chris Silverwood – and admits the last few months have been 'surreal'.

Leach, who achieved cult status with his role in this summer's drawn Ashes series against Australia, is in the squad for Silverwood's first Test matches in charge against New Zealand on November 20 and 28.

The left-arm spinner has now targeted securing his place as the Test team's main spinner during the series, which sees a number of new faces in the squad including Lancashire's Matt Parkinson.

Leach said: 'We want to be the No1 test team, there is a lot of hard work ahead so we are very motivated to do that.
