Wayne Rooney is free to make his Derby debut on Thursday after receiving international clearance to play in the Championship fixture against Barnsley.

The former England captain has officially started his 18-month player/coach deal at Pride Park – agreed last August – and has now received the necessary documentation from FIFA to allow him to feature in competitive action.

Rooney, whose last club was DC United, has been training at Derby for a month and has been in the dug-out for recent league fixtures, but the club will now hope he can drive them up the table.
