There were many moments over the years when I knew I needed to stop.
In 1995, I lost £47,000 in one afternoon just betting over the phone. I should have realised back then. I didn't learn my lesson and I lost £15,000 the next day.
It doesn't mean anything that I was a footballer, if you have an addictive personality it can happen to anybody.
Football and gambling has always had an unhealthy relationship... I once lost £47,000 in a day
The relationship between football and betting, without a doubt, is unhealthy. When you watch a match on TV, at half-time the first advert you see is Ray Winstone saying such and such a player is this price to score the first goal in the second half. It's always in your face.
Ever since online betting became available, it's been too easy to make a bet.
It wasn't so bad in my day because you went to the bookies with £500, lost it and walked out. You couldn't do anything else.
