Wales have responded to a shortage of available centres by launching a cross-border raid for one of England’s uncapped junior world champions — Nick Tompkins.

The 24-year-old Saracen is expected to be named on Wednesday in new head coach Wayne Pivac’s squad for the Six Nations. 

He played in the England Under 20 team, captained by club-mate Maro Itoje, which won the global age-group title in 2014, but he qualifies for Wales courtesy of a maternal grandmother, Enid, who was born in Wrexham in 1933.
