Dan Evans slipped to an agonising marathon defeat in the cold of the French Open after being edged out of a topsy turvy first round by former world number four Kei Nishikori.
With temperatures lagging in the mid-fifties on the first day of the rescheduled Grand Slam, the British number one went down 1-6 6-1 7-6 1-6 6-4 to the 30 year-old from Japan.
For a while it looked like that Evans would emerge the winner from a battle that last three hours and 49 minutes, and it is one several tight matches in recent weeks that have got away from him.
