Alastair Cook says England's rest and rotation policy has left him feeling sorry for Joe Root – and admits he was 'frustrated' by the performance of the batsmen during the recent 1-0 defeat by New Zealand.

That was Root's first loss in a home series since he replaced Cook as Test captain in 2017, and has increased the pressure ahead of two potentially career-defining five-match series at home to India and away to Australia.

'England have got themselves in a tough situation,' he said. 'It was going so well: winning Test series at home, Sri Lanka away, and 1-0 up in India.
