Stanislav Cherchesov SACKED as Russia manager after failing to reach the knockout stages of Euro 2020 as they finished bottom of Group B By Luke Augustus for MailOnline Published: 14:59 BST, 8 July 2021 | Updated: 14:59 BST, 8 July 2021 Viewcomments Russia are on the hunt for a new manager after they sacked Stanislav Cherchesov following their poor display at the European Championship. Cherchesov's departure was announced on Thursday afternoon - bringing to an end his reign which was just a month-shy of lasting five years. The 57-year-old had been set a target of reaching the knockout stages at the Euros - but failed that as they finished bottom of Group B. Stanislav Cherchesov has been sacked as Russia manager following their poor Euros showing Russia would have fancied their chances at progression to the last 16 after being drawn with Belgium, Denmark and Finland but blew the opportunity after being thumped 4-1 by Danes in the final round of fixtures - when a draw would have sufficed. Russia FA president Alexander Dyukov said the decision to end Cherchesov's tenure was reached after discussions with him. 'Together with Stanislav Salamovich (Cherchesov) we took the decision to end his contract,' he said in a statement. 'The Russian soccer federation will begin the search for candidates for the post of head coach to prepare the team for qualifying games for the World Cup in 2022.' Russia resumes their World Cup qualifying campaign at home against Croatia on September 1. Cherchesov took charge of the team after another group-stage exit under Leonid Slutsky at Euro 2016. He led Russia to the quarter-finals at home in the 2018 World Cup before they lost to eventual runners-up Croatia on penalties. A run of disappointing results in the Nations League last year, including a 5-0 loss to Serbia, put Cherchesov under pressure even before Russia finished bottom of Group B at Euro 2020 last month.
