Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa, 29, was racing at the Crooked River Roundup event in Oregon on Wednesday when he was bucked off his horse and suffered fatal injuries. The horse, two-year-old Godfather Advice, was running in the middle of the track when he hit the railing. The colt was trained by Gutierrez-Sosa's wife, Rosa Rodriguez. 'A gifted rider and true gentleman, Eduardo will be greatly missed by our Oregon racing family.' It was the first Crooked River Roundup race at the Grants Pass Downs course in two years, and while the second race went ahead 30 minutes after Gutierrez-Sosa fell, the rest of the day's meets were called off by race director Doug Smith. Gutierrez-Sosa's horse, two-year-old Godfather Advice, hit a railing in the middle of the track Smith told NewsChannel1 on Thursday: 'To think a young man lost his life last night just leaves us heartbroken to no end. 'It's one of those things that doesn't happen, it's never happened here. It's just absolutely heartbreaking, it just leaves us totally saddened.' One of Gutierrez-Sosa's friends, Dustie Crystal, who witnessed the tragic event told the news channel: 'It's not something that usually happens. It's like a one in a million shot that even happened.' The next race took place 30 minutes later but then the remaining schedule was called off Gutierrez-Sosa was the 2019 champion at the Crooked River Roundup and had won more than 350 races in his career. He was a 12-time stakes winner in thoroughbred races and won two $12,000 races in Idaho, which was one of the more notable moments of his career. The 29-year-old leaves behind his wife Rosa and three children. Both the local police and the state racing board are looking into the incident. It was the first Crooked River Roundup race at the Grants Pass Downs racecourse in two years Horse racing has been saddened with several tragedies in 2021, including the passing of Lorna Brooke, who tragically died aged 37 following a horror fall at Taunton Racecourse in April.
