sport news Erik Lamela is set to be the last of Tottenham's 'Magnificent Seven' to leave ...

Erik Lamela is nearing a switch to Sevilla in a move that truly feels like the end of an era for Tottenham

Not because the Argentine will be painfully missed, but because he is the last of the crop known as the 'Magnificent Seven'. They were the players brought in after Spurs went on a spending spree with the £85million Real Madrid paid for Gareth Bale back in 2013.

At the time, it felt as though spreading quality throughout the team would improve Tottenham in the long run even without their talisman, who jumped ship for the LaLiga giants.

But there were far more misses than hits among those seven players recruited by Andre Villas-Boas in a £109m spending spree.

Here, Sportsmail takes a closer look at who Tottenham signed and where they've ended up.

Roberto Soldado

Striker, £26m from Valencia; Spurs record - 76 matches, 16 goals

Soldado arrived as the man who would fill Bale's prolific boots. He came with great pedigree from Valencia where he only trailed Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao in the scoring tally over the previous couple of seasons.

And what a start he had in a white shirt. He scored four times in his first three games and it looked like Spurs had themselves a gem.

But the name Soldado is more likely to evoke a shudder from Tottenham fans now.

The Spaniard's confidence drained rapidly and he looked like a lost puppy at times, struggling with the speed and physicality of the Premier League.

He only managed six goals that season and any notion that it was Villas-Boas he didn't work well with was soon discarded when Mauricio Pochettino came in.

Soldado only managed five in 40 games the following season and Harry Kane's emergence meant they eventually cut ties.

He was sold to Villarreal for £10m in 2015 before a two-year stint at Fenerbahce and another two years with Granada.

Soldado is still going strong and signed for Levante on a two-year deal last month.

Paulinho

Midfielder, £17m from Corinthians; Spurs record - 67 matches, 10 goals

The man labelled 'The Brazilian Frank Lampard' was always doomed to underwhelm after a moniker like that to live up to.

He arrived in form having helped Brazil win the 2013 Confederations Cup and much was expected of him at Spurs.

He netted three times in his first eight games and seemed to back up Villas-Boas' claim that he was 'an all-rounder with an eye for goal'.

But Paulinho's form then dwindled and Pochettino did not seem to rate him when he took charge having come in from Southampton.

The Brazilian made just three Premier League starts in his second campaign.

In the end, Spurs cut their losses and cashed in to the tune of £9.9m with Guangzhou Evergrande signing him.

Bizarrely, Barcelona then signed him for £34m, but it actually turned out as a solid piece of business. Paulinho helped the team to a domestic double and emerged as a key player, scoring nine times in 49 games over the season.

But a year later, it was back to the Chinese Super League with Guangzhou on loan with the option to buy, which the club later exercised.

He was released by Guangzhou in June this year by mutual consent due to the Covid pandemic.

Vlad Chiriches

Centre-back, £8.5m from Steaua Bucharest; Spurs record - 41 matches, 2 goals

Chiriches will perhaps be remembered at Spurs for two things.

The first was his agent's ill advised claim that: 'If he has one or two good seasons at Tottenham, Chelsea will be willing to pay a large sum to buy him.'

And the second was footage of the
