After waiting patiently by an extra year, the time has come sports fans - two-action packed weeks of the Olympics are finally upon us.

The build up to the Olympics has been mired by Covid chaos but organisers of the Tokyo Games will be hoping that once the sporting events get underway, the doom and gloom will very much be lifted.

And ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday, Sportsmail has given fans an in-depth guide into the Olympic schedule.

All times BST: Tokyo is eight hours ahead of the UK.

DAY 1 - Saturday, July 24  

One to watch...

Cycling (3am - 10.15am): The men's road race, with Tao Geoghegan Hart, Geraint Thomas, Adam Yates and Simon Yates all in action for Britain.

Best of the rest... 

Rowing (12.30am - 4.30am): Helen Glover, 35, returns after retiring following her second straight title in Rio. She and her new rowing partner Polly Swann open their campaign in the women's pair heats.

Shooting (12.30am - 8.30am): Seonaid McIntosh in the 10m air rifle. Likely to be the first medal of the Games.

Artistic Gymnastics (2am - 2pm): Max Whitlock, after two Rio golds, leads Britain's men in qualification. 

3x3 Basketball (2.15am - 11.30am): The high-intensity game played casually around the world makes its Olympic debut.

Tennis (3am - 12pm): The singles and doubles first rounds will be played across days one and two. Andy Murray bids to win his third consecutive singles gold, and also plays doubles with Joe Salisbury.

Hockey (10.30am): Team GB's men begin their Olympic journey against South Africa.

Swimming (11am): Adam Peaty should coast through 100m breaststroke heats.

Football (11.30am): GB take on Japan in second group game having beaten Chile 2-0 with two Ellen White goals.

DAY 2 - Sunday, July 25  

One to watch...

Taekwondo (11am - 2.30pm): Jade Jones is aiming to be the first British woman to win gold at three Olympics in a row. She competes in the 57kg category, while Bradley Sinden is a British medal hope in the men's -68kg.

Surfing (Saturday 11pm - 8.20am): No British interest but a Games debut for the sport with the men's and women's shortboard.

Skateboarding (1am - 5.55am): The sport makes its Olympic debut with the men's street preliminaries and final. Nyjah Huston (USA) is favourite to win the sport's first ever gold.

Hockey (1.30am): GB Women begin the defence of their title against Germany.

Cycling (3am): 2012 silver medallist Lizzie Deignan leads the British charge in the women's road race.

Archery (5.45am - 9.25am): The team event's quarters, semis and medal matches. GB are led by new mum Naomi Folkard.

DAY 3 - Monday, July 26  

One to watch...

Swimming (2.30am - 4.30am): As close to a guaranteed gold for Britain as there can be, with Adam Peaty a white-hot favourite in the 100m breakstroke. It is an event in which the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth champion has set the 15 fastest times in history... and he says another world record is in reach.

Triathlon (Sunday 10.30pm - 1am): Jonny Brownlee, ranked ninth in the world, goes it alone without his double Olympic champion brother Alistair. Alex Yee, ranked 17, also goes for Britain.

Rugby Sevens (1am - 11.30am): The men's pool stages begin, with GB playing their opening match against Canada. Britain won silver in Rio, beaten by Fiji in the final.

Diving (7am - 8am): Tom Daley is into his fourth Olympics after two bronze medals and goes in the 10am platform synchro with Matty Lee.

Artistic Gymnastics (11am - 2.10pm): Double gold medallist Max Whitlock should be leading GB in the men's artistic team final, in which they finished fourth in Rio. Can they make the medals?

DAY 4 - Tuesday, July 27  

One to watch...

Equestrian (9am - 2.40pm): After gold and silver at the past two Games the British riders, led by Charlotte Dujardin, have high hopes in the team dressage.

Best of the rest... 

Taekwdono (11am - 2.30pm): Mahama Cho goes in the men's +80kg. Bianca Walkden, who won a bronze in Rio, is in the +67kg.

Triathlon (Monday 10.30pm - 1.05am): Georgia Taylor-Brown (2020 world champion), Vicky Holland (2016 Olympic bronze) and Jess Learmoth (2019 world silver) lead an impressive British charge.

Artistic Gymnastics (11.45am - 2.10pm): American Simone Biles won four golds in Rio and is the worldwide superstar of the women's team final.

Softball (5am - 2pm): The bronze and gold medal matches in the women's-only event, which is back on the Olympic platform for the first time since 2008.

Diving (7am - 8am): Lois Toulson and Eden Cheng compete in the women's 10m platform synchro, having won silver in both the World Cup and European Championships this year.

DAY 5 - Wednesday, July 28  

One to watch...

Road cycling (3.30am - 9.40am): The men's and women's time trials get under way. Geraint Thomas could be GB's best hope of a medal as he races alongside 2020's Giro d'Italia winner Tao Geoghegan Hart in the men's event. Anna Shackley is GB's lead contender in the women's.

Rowing (2.10am): Britain's men have won the coxless four contest on the past five occasions but go into this Games having placed third at the last two World Championships. But don't write off their quartet of Sholto Carnegie, Oliver Cook, Rory Gibbs and Matthew Rossiter.

Diving (7am): Jack Laugher and new partner Daniel Goodfellow aim to retain the men's 3m synchro diving title that Laugher won with Chris Mears in Rio. The pair also won silver at the 2019 Worlds.

Rugby Sevens (8.30am - 11.30am): The men's bronze and gold medal matches. GB will hope to go one better than in Rio, where they lost heavily to Fiji in the final.

Dressage (9.30am - 1.25pm): GB's three-time gold medal winner Charlotte Dujardin has a new horse — Mrs Valegro — but will be aiming to win another Olympic title in the individual dressage.

DAY 6 - Thursday, July 29   

One to watch...

Rowing (1.30am): After four years away from the sport, what a story it will be if Helen Glover can win gold again. She's paired with Polly Swann in the women's pair. They're this year's European champions and Glover, a mother of three, is going for her third Olympic title.

Hockey (11am): GB women play Holland in a repeat of the 2016 Rio final, where the Brits pulled off a stunning penalty shootout win. Earlier, at 4.15am, Britain's men also play Holland in what should be a key group game.

BMX Racing (2am - 4am): Has delivered constant drama since becoming an Olympic sport in 2008. Kye Whyte and Beth Shriever represent Team GB.

Swimming (3.35am): Caeleb Dressel is a potential successor to Michael Phelps' crown in the 100m freestyle final.

Canoeing (6am - 8.45am): GB's Mallory Franklin, the 2017 world champion, will go for gold in the final.

Gymnastics (11.50am - 2.05pm): Simone Biles could become the first woman in more than 50 years to win back-to-back all-round titles.

DAY 7 - Friday, July 30  

One to watch...

Women's 100m (3.40am - 4.30am): Athletics begins with the men's high jump and the early rounds of the women's 800m, the men's 400m hurdles and, of course, the women's 100m which means a chance to see Dina Asher-Smith, Team GB's world silver medallist.

Rowing (12.45am - 2.55am): The GB men's eight look to repeat their Rio gold on the final day of the rowing races, though they were only third at the 2019 World Championships. Vicky Thornley is in action in the women's single sculls.

Swimming (2.40am): Luke Greenbank is a medal hope for GB in the men's 200m backstroke. Greenbank took bronze at the worlds in 2019, and silver at the Europeans earlier this year.

Trampolining (5am - 7.30am): Remember Bryony Page landing Britain's first ever medal in the sport with a sensational silver in Rio? Well, she is now going again with fellow Brit Laura Gallagher.

Football (9am - 2pm): The women's football reaches the quarter-final stage at venues around Japan.

Judo (9am - 11.50am): After narrowly missing out on a place at London and Rio, Sarah Adlington finally gets to make her Olympic bow in the +78kg category.

DAY 8 - Saturday, July 31  

One to watch... 

Athletics (1.50pm): Dina Asher-Smith will hope to lead GB on to the podium in the final of the women's 100m, the event in which she won world silver. She will also look to take advantage of the absence of US gold medal hopeful Sha'Carri Richardson, who is serving a cannabis ban.

Triathlon (Friday 11.30pm - 1.30am): The mixed relay makes its Olympic debut. Two men and two women take turns in a 300m swim, 8km bike ride and 2km run.

Rugby Sevens (1am - 11am): Crunch time in the women's event with a stacked day of action. Team GB missed out on a medal in Rio, finishing fourth. Can they go at least one better?

Tennis (4am - 12pm): Naomi Osaka could provide one of Japan's biggest moments of the Games if she reaches the women's singles final.

Shooting (4am - 9.10am): Seonaid McIntosh, 25, is one of Britain's most decorated rifle shooters and will target the podium in the women's 50m rifle three positions — where competitors
