Islam Makhachev's approach to call-outs at the weekend resembled throwing spaghetti at a wall.

In the weeks ahead we'll find out if anything sticks and the 29-year-old's next fight will go a long way to proving whether Khabib Nurmagomedov's protégé could be even better than the 'Eagle' himself and is destined for a lightweight championship.

He moved to 20-1 with a submission win over Thiago Moises on Saturday night but in truth, fans already knew the Dagestani was a level above and want to see him in there with a real killer.

Makhachev wants one more fight in 2021 and is clearly desperate to move out of Khabib's shadow with a statement win.

He took the mic in Las Vegas on Saturday fresh from the win and called out No 6 ranked Rafael dos Anjos, saying: 'Why all these guys run? Nobody want to take this fight. Give me the answer. One more thing, I took this fight versus dos Anjos.

'Before two weeks and now I'm going to give him three, four months [to get ready]. Let's do this. You can run but you can't hide. I'm coming. I'm here.'

But in the hours that followed, Makhachev seemed to move away from the Brazilian and declared interest in scrapping with Tony Ferguson, Michael Chandler and Beneil Dariush.

So, after this scattergun approach, who makes sense for Makhachev and the UFC as his next opponent?

Rafael dos Anjos - 30-13

Lightweight ranking - No 6

Will Dana White risk booking this one again? Dos Anjos and Makhachev were supposed to fight on two separate occasions but it never materialised.

They were scheduled to meet at UFC 254, but a positive COVID-19 test forced dos Anjos out.

That encounter was rebooked for UFC Fight Night 182, but it was Makhachev who was forced out due to injury on that occasion.

Both have since gone on to clock impressive wins, dos Anjos over Paul Felder and Makhachev over Drew Dober and Moises.

So will it be third time lucky?

Dos Anjos previously took to Twitter to say he would agree to fight Makhachev again but with one rather large condition attached.

He will only do it if Khabib guarantees him a fight afterwards. The 36-year-old wrote: 'If your brother Khabib fights me after I beat you let's do it.'

Clearly Khabib is happily retired and revelling in his support role for Makhachev, he is an invaluable presence in the corner and training room but dos Anjos' response must grate on the younger Dagestani.

He is grateful for everything Khabib gives him, from the advice to financial support of putting the team up in the US, but this is his time to shine now.

Comparisons are inevitable but there is one opponent who would really help Makhachev show he is his own man...

Tony Ferguson (25-6)

Lightweight ranking - No 5

Khabib vs Ferguson seemed cursed. The misfortune was at times laughable as the fight was arranged and fell off on five separate occasions.

Injuries to both men, botched weight cuts and a global pandemic ruined the chances of the fight taking place when 'El Cucuy' was at the peak of his powers.

Many believed he could be the kryptonite to Khabib's smothering style with his unorthodox striking and deadly ground game.

It was not to be and we're looking at a very different Ferguson now. He was brutalised by Justin Gaethje last year and has not been the same since.

A defeat by now champion Charles Oliveira and then Beneil Dariush brought his stock even lower but the narrative is there for a clash with Makhachev.

Makhachev beating the 37-year-old could really be a passing of the torch moment.

It might not be the Dagestani wrestler fans wanted to fight Ferguson for so long but it is the next best thing.

And Ferguson would be Makhachev's opponent of choice too. He said: 'If they're gonna give me a choice, let's go with Tony because we have a good history with him.

'Khabib was supposed to fight with him five or six times, let's finish this. I'm gonna finish this. And I'm gonna show people around the world that Tony is not Khabib-level.

'People don't understand how Khabib pressures. I can't explain to you guys, but I think
