The withdrawal of Europe’s pre-eminent older miler Palace Pier has robbed this afternoon’s Group One feature of a mouth-watering duel, but hopefully racegoers will still witness another marquee performance by a talented colt. The rain may nullify Poetic Flare’s explosive change of gear, but he showed in the Irish Guineas when just failing to overhaul stablemate Mac Swiney on horrible ground at The Curragh that he can cope with the dirty side of the job too. The conditions yesterday played to the strengths of Trueshan in the Goodwood Cup, but Poetic Flare may have to win in spite of them as he showed blistering speed and acceleration in a brilliant display on fast ground at Royal Ascot in the St James’s Place Stakes. The selection has also been off for six weeks which, for a horse that appeared to run every few days in the summer, is quite a hiatus but he is handled by a master trainer in Jim Bolger and I am hopeful he still has the attributes required to see off two talented fillies in Snow Lantern and Alcohol Free. Both arrive in great heart after a thrilling conclusion to the Falmouth Stakes and the ground should be no concern given they were also involved in the Coronation Stakes finish at Royal Ascot on a deep surface. However, neither reached the level of Poetic Flare’s latest display and he is hard to oppose if in the same form.
