The Brit went into the laser run in fifth and 15 seconds behind gold, but a brilliant display cut that deficit swiftly and she powered to victory as none of her competitors could live with her running power. Joseph Choong will be hoping to make it a modern pentathlon double on Saturday as he goes in the men's event, currently in fourth place. Kate French won a sensational gold medal for Team GB in the women's modern pentathlon The British athlete went into the laser run in fifth place after going clear in the show jumping The 30-year-old won her swimming heat earlier in the day to set up her hopes of a medal French got her day off to a superb start as she won her swimming heat, and after the fencing round that followed she sat in eighth place. The British athlete was then one of very few to go clear in the show jumping, though did have six time penalties, strengthening her medal chances. By the time she arrived for the second shoot in the laser run she was out in front, and French didn't look back from there.
