Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei puts 10,000m heartbreak behind him to claim 5,000 Olympic gold in Tokyo... with Team GB's Andrew Butchart finishing eleventh By Sam Blitz For Mailonline Published: 13:22 BST, 6 August 2021 | Updated: 13:25 BST, 6 August 2021 Viewcomments Ugandan runner Joshua Cheptegei made up for just missing out on the 10,000 meters gold medal by winning the men's 5,000 meters final in Tokyo, with Team GB's Andrew Butchart finishing in eleventh. Cheptegei claimed silver in the 10,000 meters but led the way for almost all of Friday night's race to take his first ever Olympic gold, with Canada's Mohammed Ahmed taking silver and Team USA's Paul Chelimo sealing bronze. Britain's Butchart, taking part in his second Olympic final, kept up with the main group for most of the race but fell away with around three laps to go. However, the 29-year-old from Dunblane did manage to record a season-best time of 13:09.97.
