The virtual Jaidon Anthony has been part of the FIFA video game series for a couple of years now but bears little resemblance to the real thing.

'It doesn't really look like me. It is always a bit weird seeing yourself playing in there, it's quite bizarre really,' says the 21-year-old Bournemouth winger.

EA Sports will definitely need to do a bit better for their next instalment if, as everyone at the Vitality Stadium hopes, Anthony becomes one of the breakout stars of the Championship season starting this weekend.

The youngster was handed his first taste of Championship football by the Cherries last winter and, after a positive pre-season, hopes he has impressed new manager Scott Parker enough to win a regular place in a team with designs on getting back to the Premier League.

Parker's usual way of setting up his teams, with an accent on keeping possession and attacking from wide areas, should suit a player blessed with speed, skill and passing vision.

But it's been far from a straightforward journey to reach this point for Anthony, who was a contemporary of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka in Arsenal's academy but released at the age of 16 because he was deemed too small.

Anthony went down many cul-de-sacs of unsuccessful trials at clubs up and down the country but never got lost despite being at a time of life when falling out of love with football would have been easy.

In the end, he found his way to the south coast, where Bournemouth's coaching staff polished his game and put him on the fast track to a professional career as a belated growth spurt took him to above 6ft tall.

Now those uncertain times have been replaced by big ambition with Anthony, who will take the No 32 shirt this season, determined to make an impact in a notoriously gruelling division.

'There were a lot of landmarks last season and it's what you dream of,' Anthony tells Sportsmail. 'Every time I got to play it was an amazing feeling.

'The new manager will always have new ideas and a new way of thinking. It's always exciting going into the new season and this one especially.

'It's definitely an opportunity to stamp my mark and try to impress him and show what I can bring to the table. He has been excellent so far.'

And so has the young winger with things now moving forward at pace.

A video clip of a sublime through ball to set up Dominic Solanke's goal against Spanish club Granada during their pre-season training camp was posted on Bournemouth's Twitter account.

Then Anthony was the matchday programme cover star for last weekend's Carabao Cup game against MK Dons. The word is spreading.

The only hitch of late was a training ground injury that saw him break his wrist, keeping him out of Bournemouth's glamour friendly with Chelsea in which Anthony would have renewed acquaintance with old opponents from his Arsenal days such as Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The wrist now in a protective cast, Anthony is hoping for some action when the Cherries host fellow promotion hopefuls West Brom in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Friday night.
