George Russell is set to be named as a Mercedes driver next year — a decision that has gone down ‘like a lead balloon’ with Lewis Hamilton.
The world champion had hoped to extend his five-season partnership with Valtteri Bottas but team principal Toto Wolff has taken the braver call of handing the hottest seat in motor racing to 23-year-old Russell to form a potentially combustive all-British line-up.
A key piece of the jigsaw fell into place last night with 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, 41, announcing his retirement at the end of the year. That frees up a seat at Alfa Romeo, which Wolff is keen to steer Bottas towards as compensation for his commitment to the Mercedes cause.
