So, the summer transfer window has come and gone. Some landed their targets, while others missed out, with loads of deadline-day moves failing to materialise or collapsing at the last minute.

The players linked with moves away from their clubs now face a four-month wait before they can have the opportunity to get a transfer away again.

There are also some big-name players around Europe who are either set to spend the season on the periphery or unsettled at their clubs after missing out on a summer move.

Here, Sportsmail take a look at the 10 stars most likely to get transfers away when the January window opens for business in a few months' time.

Edinson Cavani may leave Man United in January if he finds himself down the pecking order

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguayan is said to be determined to see out the last year of his contract at Old Trafford, but his resolve will be tested if he spends most of his time on the bench, as is expected.

United were willing to part with him on deadline day, entertaining an enquiry from Barcelona and offering his services to Juventus, who turned down the opportunity to sign him.

With Cristiano Ronaldo adding to what is already a bloated squad of attacking talent, Cavani will likely find himself largely out of the first-team picture. Given United were hardly fighting to keep hold him just days ago suggests Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has settled on who will be playing in his forward line.

Mason Greenwood has already staked an early claim for the central striker position, scoring three from his opening three in the Premier League, while United still have Marcus Rashford to come back, with Ronaldo as an option to play down the middle.

Anthony Martial, who is under immense scrutiny amid a poor run of form, has also played as the centre forward twice already this season.

With Cavani's deal running out next summer, if the opportunity arose for a permanent transfer, it could suit all parties. United get a fee rather than see him leave for nothing and Cavani gets first-team opportunities for the second half of the season, which in turn could help him to secure another deal elsewhere in the summer.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

The battle to get into Chelsea's midfield was hard enough without adding Saul Niguez to the mix.

Now Ruben Loftus-Cheek is even further marginialised and he must be considering his future at Chelsea for the sake of his career. He's never truly broken into the first-team fold at Stamford Bridge and looks destined to spend this season on the periphery.

The midfielder is 25 now and has still not managed to shake that nagging feeling that we haven't quite seen the best of him. There were bright moments last year at Fulham, which were enough to attract a fair amount of interest this summer, but that didn't materialise into a transfer.

We've seen it before: if Loftus-Cheek is fit and confident, he's a real player. But he needs a manager who trusts him and regular minutes. Last month, Roma and Napoli both were reportedly interested in him.

Seeing how joining Roma has refreshed Tammy Abraham's career, surely Loftus-Cheek will strive for an exit if the chance came up again in January.

Jules Kounde

This one could turn ugly.

Jules Kounde looked for all the world like he was going to be a Chelsea player come the end of the summer window. A fee was agreed and then Sevilla hiked their asking price, sparking the collapse of his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Frenchman was excited at the prospect of signing for Chelsea and reports in Spain this week have claimed he has been left 'furious' with Sevilla after his move fell through.

He is said to be ignoring calls from his manager Julen Lopetegui and director of football Monchi as well. Early indications suggest Kounde won't let his dream Chelsea move die easily.

It does Sevilla no favours having an unsettled star around, so you imagine should the proposal to sell Kounde come up again in January, it will be more straightforward to do a deal. The player wants it, Chelsea still want him and now Sevilla may be left with no choice but to go along with it.

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe's potential move to Real Madrid was the transfer saga of the summer.

The will he, won't he narrative was like something straight out of a rom-com as Real Madrid made numerous attempts to lure him away from PSG before pulling out of a deal.

The 22-year-old sensation has his heart set on joining Real and rejected several lucrative contract offers to extend his stay at PSG, with his current deal running out at the end of this season.

Madrid had two offers of £137m and £154m rebuffed by PSG despite Mbappe's contract situation, but it now seems like a matter of when and not if the Frenchman moves to the Spanish capital.

Reports this week claimed Mbappe will now likely join Real on a free transfer next summer. But you expect PSG - with the fact they could lose a player they spent £166m for nothing dawning on them - will be eager to get Madrid back to the negotiating table in January if Mbappe's stance remains the same.

Ousmane Dembele

Barcelona are still going through the rigmarole of trying to get Ousmane Dembele to sign a new contract.

Talks have been going on for what feels like an eternity now, but the Catalan giants
