The Reds' third strip has been inspired by the flags of the infamous Kop and the 1977 European Cup final. The collar and sleeves feature a red and yellow chequered trim reminiscent of the flags and banners that decorate Anfield's Kop and first illuminated Liverpool's section of fans during their dominant 1977 European Cup final win over Borussia Monchengladbach. Captain Jordan Henderson and defensive talisman Virgil van Dijk don the new Nike third kit Midfielder Curtis Jones wears the new Nike kit with a red and yellow chequered collar May 25 is remembered by many Anfield faithful for the miracle of Istanbul in 2005 but long before that it represented the start of the club's love affair with the competition. Goals from Terry McDermott, Tommy Smith and a penalty from Phil Neal sealed Bob Paisley's side a 3-1 victory in their first ever European Cup final. The travelling Kop had conquered Rome for the day with an electric atmosphere, which set a precedent for all future big European nights. Liverpool won the 1977 European Cup final beating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 The 1977 final was the first time the Reds has reached the coveted showpiece match Liverpool fans arrived in Rome in droves to fill the Stadio Olimpico with red and yellow flags Liverpool last wore a yellow away kit in the 2014-15 season but garnered their association with colour from six different strips in the 1980s. The club began their historic relationship with the colour as early as the 1950s but it became so popular during the 1970s and 80s that it was quickly incorporated into their regular alternate colour palette. It may not have been a mainstay for the club since the 1980s but success under Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish in yellow strips with a Crown Paints sponsor made it an iconic colour. Takumi Minamino proudly shows off the new strip which features thin pinstripes on the front The 96-emblem encased in eternal flames that honours the men, women and children who lost their lives in the Hillsborough tragedy sits on the nape of the neck. From the 2022-23 season the emblem will change to 97 in recognition of Andrew Devine, the 97th person unlawfully killed as a result of the Hillsborough disaster. Just like the team's home and away shirts this season, the third kit will be made from 100 per cent recycled polyester fabric from plastic bottles. The kit can be pre-ordered from today and will be available for sale from Tuesday September 21.
