While the Championship side scored all eight of their spot-kicks, Dieng pushed the 15th kick of a dramatic shoot-out against the post before Jimmy Dunne sealed Rangers’ first fourth round appearance since 2008-09. Dieng had also saved from Ben Godfrey only for the officials to judge the keeper had stepped off his line, with the Everton man converting the re-take. QPR are through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a shootout win over Everton It followed an engrossing cup tie in which 32-year-old Charlie Austin showed his enduring class with two well-taken headers to twice give QPR the lead, only for first Lucas Digne and then Andros Townsend to equalise for the Premier League side. Both managers made five changes from their defeats at the weekend. Everton have a mounting injury list featuring the likes of Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jordan Pickford, preventing Rafael Benitez from rotating too much. Then again, there was no reason why Everton wouldn’t be targeting success in the Carabao Cup as they attempt to end a trophy drought dating back to 1995. It looked a strong Toffees side and they carved out a good early opportunity. Alex Iwobi was played into space down the right side and cut the ball back well to youngster Anthony Gordon, whose shot required strong hands from QPR keeper Dieng. But the Championship side were up for the occasion and Austin was more than happy to snap at the heels of the Everton defenders. The striker gained his reward on 18 minutes after some slick football from Mark Warburton’s team. Chris Willock’s ball played Ilias Chair in behind Everton lines and he cut back on the byline before finding Sam McCallum’s dart into the box. His cross was only palmed out by Asmir Begovic and came invitingly to Austin, whose looping header from six yards just beat the defender on the line. Everton were stung into action, with Andre Gomes flashing a shot wide before an excellent chance to level was wasted just before the half-hour. Yoann Barbet slipped over and Iwobi was clean through on goal, ignoring the square pass to Andros Townsend only to be denied by a superb Dieng block as the Hoops keeper stood his ground. It mattered little as Everton’s goal arrived a few moments later. It owed everything to the vision of Townsend, roaming with the ball on the edge of the QPR box before dinking a pass over the defence. Digne managed to stay onside and caught the ball well enough on the volley to finish at the near post. But celebrations in the away end were soon muted. Just four minutes later, Chair picked up the ball wide on the left touchline and cut back with a neat touch before swinging in a cross. There was the poacher Austin once again to leap highest and glance a deft header into the far corner. Everton needed a response and they certainly got it just two minutes after the break. Dieng couldn’t stop the ball spinning out for a corner and following a near post routine, Mason Holgate’s shot was blocked before Townsend whipped the rebound home. For the first time in the game, Everton enjoyed a period of sustained supremacy and their travelling fans screamed for a penalty when Abdoulaye Doucoure went down in the box under pressure from Rob Dickie but the referee was unimpressed. Michael Keane was introduced from the bench with 10 minutes left and almost headed home with his very first touch from a corner, just clearing the bar.
