The Indian Wells Masters lost two of the top-four ranked players in the world, with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev both knocked out in the quarter-finals overnight.
World No 3 Tsitsipas was knocked out of the California event in three sets by unseeded Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili 4-6 6-2 4-6, while Zverev, the reigning Olympic champion and the world No 4, lost 6-4 3-6 6-7 (3-7) to Taylor Fritz.
The German failed to convert two match points when up 5-3 in the second set, hitting two double faults to give Fritz a lifeline.
