Raiders cut Willie Snead after veteran receiver asked for his release, per report

Willie Snead's brief time with the Raiders has come to a close as the club released the veteran wide receiver on Tuesday, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rosenhaus added that Snead "wasn't playing much and asked for the release" likely in hopes of finding a more stable role somewhere else in the league. Rosenhaus also expects there to be a market for the 29-year-old. 

Snead signed with the Raiders back in March on a one-year, $1.1 million deal. As Rosenhaus noted, the veteran wasn't seeing much playing time as he participated in just 7.9% of the offensive snaps to this point in the season. Through seven games played, he's received five targets, catching three for 32 yards. 

Prior to landing with Las Vegas, Snead originally came into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2014 out of Ball State. He eventually clung on with the Saints and eventually carved a role for himself in that rotation. His best years in the league were with New Orleans, catching 149 passes for 1,971 yards and seven touchdowns over a three-year stretch. 

More recently, Snead had been with the Baltimore Ravens. In 2020, he played 13 games (eight starts) and caught 33 of his 48 targets for 432 yards and three scores. 

As for where Snead may end up, let's take a look at four options that may make sense as he looks for his latest chapter in the league. 

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers are seemingly always flush with wide receivers, but it might not be a bad idea to take a look at Snead, especially in the aftermath of losing JuJu Smith-Schuster for the season due to a shoulder injury. Snead could provide some experienced depth behind Dionte Johnson and Chase Claypool. This addition could also give the Steelers more flexibility with former second-round pick James Washington at the NFL trade deadline. 

Indianapolis Colts

Parris Campbell is possibly out for the remainder of the season after recently undergoing foot surgery and veteran T.Y. Hilton has also been in-and-out of the Colts lineup throughout the season. Snead could be a nice compliment to Michael Pittman Jr. and Zach Pascall on the depth chart and serving as the No. 3 receiver could be a realistic avenue for consistent playing time for the veteran. 

Los Angeles Chargers 

The Chargers don't necessarily need to add to the wide receiver unit with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams atop the depth chart, but adding depth for the stretch run may not be a bad thing. Joe Lombardi is also the new offensive coordinator for the Chargers this season and was with Snead as the Saints quarterbacks coach during the receiver's prime years in New Orleans. In theory, Snead may not need much catching up in Lombardi's offense. 

New Orleans Saints

Would be a poetic homecoming for Snead as his career began in New Orleans. The Saints may also be in need of some help at the receiver position. Against the Seahawks on Monday night, Saints wide receivers caught just four of their 16 targets for 43 yards. Superstar
