Chelsea 1-1 Burnley: Matej Vydra leaves Blues stunned following late equaliser after Thomas Tuchel's Premier League leaders failed to build on Kai Havertz's first half header at Stamford Bridge Kai Havertz headed home after half-hour mark following dominant Chelsea start Blues controlled game before substitute Matej Vydra scored for Burnley late on Clarets' late show denied the Blues an eighth straight victory in all competitions By Dan Ripley for MailOnline Published: 13:21 GMT, 6 November 2021 | Updated: 17:04 GMT, 6 November 2021 11 shares 88 Viewcomments Advertisement Sean Dyche’s inspired substitutions enabled Burnley to take an unlikely point at Stamford Bridge and stop Chelsea’s winning run. The Premier League leaders appeared to be heading for a routine victory when Kai Havertz, deputising at centre-forward for the injured Romelu Lukaku, headed in after 33 minutes shortly after he’d needed treatment for tumbling over an advertising hoarding. But their chances of a fifth consecutive league win were ended when Dyche sent on Jay Rodriguez and Matej Vydra midway through the second half – and the pair combined for Vydra to nab an equaliser after 79 minutes. Though a draw keeps Chelsea three points clear at the top while Burnley stay in the relegation zone, there is no doubt the visitors were the happier of the two teams at the final whistle. Ross Barkley was the surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s line-up having last started a league game for Chelsea in 2019/20. Burnley enjoyed their first win of the season against Brentford last weekend but Sean Dyche’s side were put on the back foot from the opening whistle. Their goalkeeper Nick Pope made an excellent early stop to deny Callum Hudson-Odoi and Andreas Christensen went close with a header from Chelsea’s first corner. Barkley’s first opportunity arrived after 12 minutes when he exchanged passes with the in-form James and was close to a spectacular finish attempting to chip into Pope’s top right-hand corner. Without Lukaku and Timo Werner, Chelsea found Burnley tougher to break down than Norwich who had been hammered 7-0 at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago. Tuchel was tetchy on the touchline, hollering at Dyche after he felt a foul on Barkley had gone unpunished and voicing his displeasure at Havertz giving the ball away cheaply. Havertz tried to make amends with a run down the left but ended up over the boards due to his momentum and unhelpful shove from Ben Mee. The 22-year-old forward gingerly returned to the action after being checked over by medics and had to apply an ice pack to what looked like a wound around his thigh area. Any pain was forgotten quickly though when he put Chelsea ahead. N’golo Kante began the move with a typical surge from midfield before feeding wing-back James who had charged down the right. James scored twice at Newcastle last weekend but this time he was happy to provide with a cross of pinpoint accuracy into the box where Havertz had found space between defenders James Tarkowski and Mee to head in. Chelsea tried to put the game to bed at the start of the second half. James whipped in another pearler for Thiago to brush the outside of the post with a header. Havertz managed to sidefoot over from six yards after Chelsea had sliced open the Burnley defence and Hudson-Odoi’s dancing feet forced Pope into an excellent block with his feet. Burnley had shown virtually nothing as an attacking force and Dyche changed his centre-forward after 61 minutes, sending on Jay Rodriguez for the ineffectual Chris Wood. Another attacker Matej Vydra followed onto the pitch shortly after, prompting Tuchel to make his first change with Ruben Loftus-Cheek replacing Barkley whose last touch was close to scoring. It was Dyche’s changes that worked to great effect as Burnley conjured up an unexpected equaliser in trademark fashion after 77 minutes. Rodriguez won the aerial battle inside Chelsea’s penalty area to reach Ashley Westwood’s cross and when the ball dropped, Vydra shovelled the ball over the line from close range with only the visitor’s second attempt on target. Sensing two points dropped, Tuchel sent on his big guns Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount for the closing stages, Mount having missed the last couple of games with an issue regarding his wisdom tooth. But despite four minutes of injury-time, there wasn’t time for Chelsea to conjure up a last-gasp winner. Chelsea will look to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League table when they host Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Thomas Tuchel's side, who have scored 14 goals in their last four league victories, are aiming to win five Premier League matches in a row for the first time since 2019. But they will have to do so without Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Mateo Kovacic again, with all three still sidelined with injury. Sean Dyche's Burnley side finally ended a 12-match winless run in the Premier League by beating Brentford last weekend and they will be desperate to close the gap to those teams outside of the relegation places.
