A day after defeating the Seahawks to improve to 9-2, the Arizona Cardinals signed quarterback Trace McSorley off of the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad. McSorley adds depth to to the Cardinals' quarterback position, as starting quarterback Kyler Murray continues to deal with an ankle injury.
Murray missed his third consecutive game during this past Sunday's 23-13 win over Seattle. Murray was replaced on Sunday by veteran Colt McCoy, who was 35 of 44 for 328 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. McCoy completed 11 passes to rookie Rondale Moore, while tight end Zach Ertz caught eight of nine targets for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Former Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Green contributed to the cause with four receptions for 78 yards that included a 31-yard reception.
A sixth-round pick in the 2019 draft, McSorley threw just 10 passes during his time with the Ravens. He enjoyed a productive college career at Penn State that included 9,899 passing yards and 77 touchdown passes. He also ran for 30 touchdowns while helping the Nittany Lions capture the Big Ten title in 2016. McSorley threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns in Penn State's victory over Washington in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl.
Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury is optimistic that both Murray and receiver DeAndre Hopkins will be back when Arizona resumes play following their Week 12 bye. A hamstring injury has sidelined Hopkins for the past three games.
"That's what we're hoping," Kingsbury said about having both players back for their Week 13 game against the Bears, via the team's official website. "With those two you're hoping for them to come back and play at a really high level. The bye comes at a great time for both. They should get a lot of time for rehab and feel good coming back. We need them to be who they are and play like they play immediately."
