Ballon d'Or organisers say they are considering giving the 2020 award to Robert Lewandowski after the Bayern Munich striker controversially missed out on this week's gong to Lionel Messi.
Messi eclipsed Lewandowski by 33 points on Monday, despite Lewandowski scoring 23 more goals in 2021 and winning the Bundesliga with Bayern.
By comparison, Messi finally won an international trophy - lifting the Copa America with Argentina - and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona but in his acceptance speech, said Lewandowski would have been the worthy winner of the scrapped 2020 award.
