The first round of midweek fixtures in the Premier League this season finally arrived and it is safe to say it did not disappoint.

Liverpool dismantled their Merseyside neighbours Everton in one of the performances of the round, while Manchester City and Chelsea also kept up their strong form at the top end of the table by beating Aston Villa and Watford respectively.

There was also time on Thursday for Manchester United and Arsenal to play out one of the games of matchday 14 as Michael Carrick finished his caretaker spell in charge at Old Trafford with a 3-2 win.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at what we learned from round 14 in the top flight...

1. Rangnick must fix Old Trafford leak

As Ralf Rangnick sat in the Old Trafford stands on Thursday evening, one thing will have been abundantly clear to the German.

Manchester United have been shipping goals left, right and centre, and did so once again against Arsenal. The first may have been unfortunate from the home side's point of view, but it does not take away from the stats.

This was the 15th consecutive home game in all competitions in which the back of the United net had bulged. Only once has the club endured a worse run - back in 1959.

That is something the German simply cannot stand for and if he is to make an impact during his six-month stint, fixing things at the back is not a bad place to start.

2. Reds love playing away

Liverpool certainly enjoyed themselves against Everton on Wednesday night. The Reds produced their best display against their local rivals at Goodison Park since 1982.

At the moment, playing away from Anfield doesn't appear to affect Jurgen Klopp's men at all.

In fact, in slotting four past their Merseyside rivals, the Reds set a new Premier League record for the most goals scored in their first seven away matches.

Diogo Jota's late strike was the 25th for Liverpool on the road this season. The last top-flight club to match that was Burnley in their 1961-62 campaign.

3. You can count on Mount

With the money dished out by Chelsea in recent years on the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, it is safe to say Thomas Tuchel is not short on firepower.

However, the German has another, more reliable source it would appear when it comes to sticking the ball in the back of the net. And one that didn't cost the earth, either.

Mason Mount bagged once more for the Blues against Watford on Wednesday night. In doing so he reached double figures under the German boss - the first to do so since his arrival last January.

It was the England international's seven goal involvement in the Premier League, too, this season. The 22-year-old has scored four and set up three goals in his 11 appearances.

4. Silva has that golden touch

Few goals this week were as aesthetically pleasing as Bernardo Silva's ripper against Aston Villa.

The Portuguese star rifled home an exquisite first-time volley after watching the ball come in from the left to cap off a sensation counter-attack and ensure all three points for Pep Guardiola's men.

It was his fifth Premier League goal of the season, and his fourth in his last seven. It had previously taken him 55 top flight displays to reach that mark.

His form is drawing praise from his boss, too, with Guardiola suggesting he is 'the best' in the league. Given his recent performances, the Spaniard might just have a point.

5. Rising Son crucial for Spurs

For so long, Tottenham could call upon Harry Kane to rescue them from sticky situations. Now they are in the tightest spot of all, however, their main man has gone missing.

After his protracted transfer saga of the summer, the England captain just has not been the same player and Spurs have need a new hero. Step forward Son Heung-min.

Often overshadowed by the exploits of Kane, Son has delivered consistency this season where others in white have struggled
